My husband and I own a home in North Las Vegas for 18 years. We bought our house because we wanted to stop paying rent that keeps going up and I saw that homeownership was a better investment for the future of my family. My two children have grown up in our home and they experienced many beautiful events like birthday celebrations, parties, and Christmas, and other holidays over the years.
My 32-year-old son, his wife, and their 2 children were renting an apartment, but they were facing a rent increase that would take their monthly payment to $1,100, which was too expensive. They wouldn’t be able to make all their bills when rent was already so high and constantly increasing. So, they moved in with my husband and I with the plan to save enough money to be able to buy their first home. It’s been three years.
In addition to not being able to find a more affordable place to rent because the prices are way too high, they started the process to have a home built, but that fell through when the prices started to skyrocket. My son and his family still live with my husband and I, but we are hoping that one day, housing prices will go down, so that my son can buy a house for his family.
In North Las Vegas, both rental houses and apartments are very expensive and it leaves young families, like my son and his family, with no choice. Young parents should be able to be able to own their home, my son wants to buy a home one day so his children can grow up like he did, but instead he had to move back in with his elderly parents.
High rent also forces families to live on top of each other. Right on my block, I know of one house that has three families living there just so that they can afford to pay the rent – which is $1,900 a month for a 3 bedroom, 2 bath home. That’s not the American Dream. 3 families living in 1 bedroom each and sharing 2 bathrooms? No. My son and his family being forced to move back in instead of being able to find a home they can afford to rent or buy? Enough is enough.
North Las Vegans are being pushed out of their homes by rent increases and that’s why as a homeowner I support the Neighborhood Stability Ordinance and ask other residents to join.

Mi esposo y yo somos propietarios de una casa en North Las Vegas desde hace 18 años. Compramos nuestra casa porque queríamos dejar de pagar el alquiler que sigue subiendo y vi que ser propietario de una vivienda era una mejor inversión para el futuro de mi familia. Mis dos hijos crecieron en nuestra casa y tienen experiencias de muchos eventos hermosos como celebraciones de cumpleaños, fiestas, Navidad y otras festividades a lo largo de los años.
Mi hijo de 32 años, su esposa y sus 2 hijos estaban alquilando un departamento, pero se enfrentaban a un aumento de alquiler que llevaría su pago mensual a $1,100, lo cual era demasiado caro. No podrían pagar todas sus facturas cuando el alquiler ya era tan alto y aumentaba constantemente. Entonces, se mudaron con mi esposo y yo con el plan de ahorrar suficiente dinero para poder comprar su primera casa. Han pasado tres años.
Además de no poder encontrar un lugar más accesible para alquilar porque los precios son demasiado altos, comenzaron el proceso para construir una casa, pero eso fracasó cuando los precios comenzaron a dispararse. Mi hijo y su familia aún viven con mi esposo y yo, pero esperamos que algún día los precios de la vivienda bajen para que mi hijo pueda comprar una casa para su familia.
En North Las Vegas, tanto las casas de alquiler como los departamentos son muy caros y deja a las familias jóvenes, como mi hijo y su familia, sin opción. Los padres jóvenes deberían poder ser dueños de su casa, mi hijo quiere comprar una casa algún día para que sus hijos puedan crecer como él, pero en vez tuvo que volver a vivir con sus padres de la tercera edad.
Los altos alquileres también obligan a las familias a vivir una encima de la otra. Justo en mi cuadra, conozco una casa en la que viven tres familias solo para poder pagar el alquiler, que es de $1,900 al mes por una casa de 3 habitaciones y 2 baños. Ese no es el Sueño Americano. ¿3 familias viviendo en una habitación cada una y compartiendo 2 baños? No. ¿Mi hijo y su familia se ven obligados a mudarse de nuevo con nosotros en lugar de poder encontrar una casa que puedan alquilar o comprar? Ya es suficiente.
Los residentes de North Las Vegas están siendo expulsados de sus hogares por los aumentos de alquiler y es por eso que, como propietario, apoyo la Ordenanza de Estabilidad del Vecindario y pido a otros residentes que se unan.
