I am a single mother of three children. My eldest daughter is 14-years-old, my second daughter is 9-years-old, and my son is 4-years-old.
I have lived in North Las Vegas for the past 25 years and I am currently renting a 2-bedroom/2-bathroom apartment for $700 a month. My apartment was recently sold and even though there haven’t been any new improvements or renovations, they want to raise my rent to $1,200 – that’s a $500 increase!
There are 6 other apartments in my building. Rent increases or the pressure to move out is happening to all of us who are living there.
I don’t have savings and it is hard to move out at a short notice because a lot of money is needed: The deposit, one month’s rent, $100 to hold the apartment, and $50 for the application fee.
I am looking for another place to rent, but I need time to be able to save up at least $2,000 to be able to move into one bedroom apartment. I can’t even afford to put money away or save to move because I’m paying so much for rent here and I’m not sure how I’m going to make it. A $500 rent increase is just not fair.
I am a single mom, I don’t get child support. I am in a difficult situation. I am so nervous I don’t know where we are going to live. My mom says that we can move in with her, but there is not enough room for my children and I. The high cost of rent in North Las Vegas has really put us in a difficult situation.
Everything is so expensive and I am living paycheck to paycheck. All I want is to be able to pay the rent and my bills, but with the pandemic and rising rent, it is has been very difficult.
My plan is to keep looking for a place to rent that I can afford. We need a solution to the housing crisis in North Las Vegas, and that’s why I’m here today sharing my story in support of the Neighborhood Stability Ordinance, we need something to change – we won’t be able to make it otherwise.

Mi mamá dice que podemos mudarnos con ella, pero no hay suficiente espacio para mis hijos y para mí. El alto costo de alquiler en North Las Vegas realmente nos ha puesto en una situación difícil.
Todo es tan caro y vivo de cheque a cheque. Todo lo que quiero es poder pagar el alquiler y mis facturas, pero con la pandemia y el aumento de alquiler ha sido muy difícil.Mi plan es seguir buscando un lugar para alquilar que yo pueda pagar. Necesitamos una solución a la crisis de vivienda en North Las Vegas, y es por eso que hoy estoy aquí compartiendo mi historia en apoyo a la Ordenanza de Estabilidad del Vecindario, necesitamos que algo cambie, no podremos hacerlo de otra manera.
