I was raised in North Las Vegas and a lot of my ministry work is situated in my community and I’m proud to say that last year, I had the opportunity to be able to buy my first home. I was intentional about creating a home in North Las Vegas because I’ve lived there for most of my adult life and it is a community that has supported and raised me.
Buying a home in North Las Vegas was important to me so so that my wife and I could raise our two children (who are ages 7 and 10) closer to my parents and that has been a blessing.
I love being a part of a community where people know my family and I know my neighbors, that isn’t possible when hard working folks are pushed out because of the high cost of rent. As a pastor, something that is on my heart often is the pain from seeing families being evicted due to the high (and continually rising) cost of rent – that doesn’t allow any stability and that impacts our entire community. If folks are moving in and out – that’s unstable.
As a homeowner, I want to know who I am living next to and as a pastor, I want to know how I can support them and be a friend to them. The Bible says: “…What does the LORD require of you, but to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?” (Micah 6:8). That is a principle that I believe in: That I should not just care about myself, but also the folks who live on either side of me.
We want folks in North Las Vegas to have security and stability in our neighborhoods because insecurity and instability can cause crime.
I live in a gated community, but I remember distinctly that Trayvon Martin also lived in a gated community. I have two little boys who are gonna grow up, in a society that is going to continue to criminalize young Black men with rising crime – even if that is not the reality, disproportionately it will be portrayed as such.
The unfortunate thing is these huge out-of-state corporations are driving up rent and that sometimes divides us. We hate our neighbors who are trying to get food and survive, but the people who are literally raising rents, evicting us, and leaving us on the street – we act sometimes as if they are titans of industry and that isn’t right.
In the conversation about rising rents, we have to be honest about the spirit of greed that is running rampant and it needs to be addressed. I certainly believe in prayer and the power of God, but I also believe that it can be addressed by legislative means. We can pray and vote for the legislative means that brings us in alignment with justice and what that looks like for people who are marginalized.
Rising rent suffocates and deteriorates families – primarily Black, low-income, and communities of color where you have folks working multiple jobs just to make rent. Poverty depresses families so that parents can’t position their children to do better and have more opportunities. If we are really gonna call ourselves the “land of opportunity,” then we have to seriously address this issue of rising rent.
It’s a moral issue. If your entire paycheck is going to rent then you can’t afford to have the balance in your life that hard working folks deserve. North Las Vegas residents should be able to go on vacation, send their kids to college, spend money in our community, and to one day purchase a home – the inability to do that is not good for a moral state of this country.
Isaiah 32:18 says: “My people will abide in a peaceful habitation, in secure dwellings, and in quiet resting places.” Our community deserves all of that and more, that’s why I am here today to support the Neighborhood Stability Ordinance so that North Las Vegas residents can have the economic justice we need.

Me crié en North Las Vegas y gran parte de mi trabajo ministerial se encuentra en mi comunidad y me enorgullece decir que el año pasado tuve la oportunidad de poder comprar mi primera casa. Tenía la intención de crear un hogar en North Las Vegas porque he vivido allí la mayor parte de mi vida adulta y es una comunidad que me ha apoyado y criado.
Comprar una casa en North Las Vegas fue importante para mí para que mi esposa y yo pudiéramos criar a nuestros dos hijos (que tienen 7 y 10 años) más cerca de mis padres y eso ha sido una bendición.
Me encanta ser parte de una comunidad donde las personas conocen a mi familia y yo conozco a mis vecinos, eso no es posible cuando la gente trabajadora se ve obligada a mudarse debido al alto costo del alquiler. Como pastor, algo que a menudo está en mi corazón es el dolor de ver a las familias ser desalojadas debido al alto (y continuamente creciente) costo del alquiler, que no permite ninguna estabilidad y que afecta a toda nuestra comunidad. Si la gente llega y se va, eso es inestable.
Como propietario de una casa, quiero saber quién es mi vecino y, como pastor, quiero saber cómo puedo apoyarlos y ser un amigo para ellos. La Biblia dice: “…¿Qué requiere el Señor de ti, que actúes con justicia, que ames la misericordia y que camines humildemente con tu Dios?” (Miqueas 6:8). Ese es un principio en el que yo creo: que no solo debo preocuparme por mí, sino también por las personas que viven a mi lado.
Queremos que la gente de North Las Vegas tenga seguridad y estabilidad en nuestros vecindarios porque la inseguridad y la inestabilidad pueden generar delitos.Vivo en una comunidad cerrada, pero recuerdo claramente que Trayvon Martin también vivía en una comunidad cerrada. Tengo dos niños pequeños que van a crecer, en una sociedad que continuará criminalizando a los jóvenes negros con el aumento de la delincuencia, aun si esa no sea la realidad, desproporcionadamente se retratará como tal.
Lo desafortunado es que estas enormes corporaciones provenientes de otros estados están aumentando los alquileres y eso a veces nos divide. Odiamos a nuestros vecinos que están tratando de conseguir comida y sobrevivir, pero las personas que literalmente aumentan los alquileres, desalojándonos y dejándonos en la calle, a veces actuamos como si fueran gigantes de la industria y eso no está bien.
En la conversación sobre el aumento de los alquileres, tenemos que ser honestos sobre el espíritu de codicia que está descontrolado y que debe abordarse. Ciertamente creo en la oración y en el poder de Dios, pero también creo que se puede abordar por medios legislativos. Podemos orar y votar por los medios legislativos que nos ponga en alineamiento con la justicia y cómo sería eso para las personas que están marginadas.
El aumento de la renta asfixia y deteriora a las familias, principalmente comunidades de personas negras, de bajos ingresos y de color donde hay personas que trabajan en varios trabajos solo para pagar el alquiler. La pobreza oprime a las familias para que los padres no puedan posicionar a sus hijos para que les vaya mejor y tengan más oportunidades. Si realmente vamos a llamarnos la “tierra de las oportunidades”, entonces tenemos que abordar seriamente este problema del aumento de los alquileres.
Es una cuestión moral. Si todo su cheque de pago se va para el alquiler, entonces no puede darse el lujo de tener equilibrio en su vida lo cual merecen las personas trabajadoras. Los residentes de North Las Vegas deberían poder irse de vacaciones, enviar a sus hijos a la universidad, gastar dinero en nuestra comunidad y algún día comprar una casa; la incapacidad de hacer eso no es bueno para el estado moral de este país.
Isaías 32:18 dice: “Mi pueblo habitará en una habitación de paz, en habitaciones seguras y en lugares de reposo tranquilos”. Nuestra comunidad merece todo eso y más, es por eso que estoy aquí hoy para apoyar la Ordenanza de Estabilidad del Vecindario para que los residentes de North Las Vegas puedan tener la justicia económica que necesitamos.
