When we moved to Las Vegas in 2015 we were able to find a house to rent in North Las Vegas. We lived there for 4 years, but things were not so great. The house and yard were too small. We couldn’t have any pets. We couldn’t hang up any decorations on the walls because the owner had put in the lease that we couldn’t make any holes in the walls. We couldn’t change the landscaping so I had all of my plants in pots. We also couldn’t increase the size of our household.

In 2019, my husband and I decided that we needed to buy our own home. We started the process and found out it was cheaper to pay for a mortgage then to rent. I was full-time at this point at The Flamingo so my good union job gave me the opportunity to afford this next step.

I was renting in North Las Vegas and so I decided to buy there too. North Las Vegas is a beautiful city where my children have grown up and are continuing to thrive. The home that we bought is 4 bedrooms, 3 full baths, 3 living rooms, and a large backyard. The area is peaceful and there are schools, shopping centers, and highways close by.

Now that we have our own home, I am able to put up all my family photos on the walls and plant my garden the way I want. I have two children that are still living with me and my family has more than enough room. We are very happy with our living situation.

I have seen things change for renters in North Las Vegas in the last couple of years. My son and his family used to rent a 2 bedroom, 1.5 bath apartment for $890 a month. They are now paying $1,300 for that same apartment. Everything is so expensive right now and he is paying a lot of money for his rent. I worry that he won’t be able to afford to save up money to buy his first home because all his money is going to rent.

As a homeowner and mother, I support the Neighborhood Stability campaign because it is good for my community and my family. I have a son who is a renter and I want him to be able to have a better life. I can help him by supporting this law. That’s why I am canvassing with the Culinary Union to help educate voters about what they can do to help our community. If you live in North Las Vegas, vote for Neighborhood Stability!

Cuando nos mudamos a Las Vegas en 2015 pudimos encontrar una casa para alquilar en North Las Vegas. Vivimos allí durante 4 años, pero las cosas no iban tan bien. La casa y el patio eran demasiado pequeños. No podíamos tener ninguna mascota. No podíamos colgar ninguna decoración en las paredes porque el propietario había estipulado en el contrato de alquiler que no podíamos hacer agujeros en las paredes. No pudimos cambiar el paisaje, así que tuve todas mis plantas en macetas. Tampoco pudimos aumentar el tamaño de nuestro hogar.

En 2019, mi esposo y yo decidimos que necesitábamos comprar nuestra propia casa. Empezamos el proceso y descubrimos que era más barato pagar una hipoteca que alquilar. En ese momento trabajaba a tiempo completo en The Flamingo, por lo que mi buen trabajo sindical me dio la oportunidad de dar el siguiente paso.

Estaba alquilando en North Las Vegas y decidí comprar allí también. North Las Vegas es una hermosa ciudad donde mis hijos han crecido y continúan prosperando. La casa que compramos tiene 4 habitaciones, 3 baños completos, 3 salas de estar y un gran patio de atrás. La zona es tranquila y hay escuelas, centros comerciales y carreteras cercanas.

Ahora que tenemos nuestra propia casa, puedo poner todas las fotos de mi familia en las paredes y plantar mi jardín como quiero. Tengo dos hijos que todavía viven conmigo y mi familia tiene espacio más que suficiente. Estamos muy contentos con nuestra situación de convivencia.

He visto cambiar las cosas para los inquilinos en North Las Vegas en los últimos años. Mi hijo y su familia alquilaban un departamento de 2 habitaciones y 1.5 baños por $890 al mes. Ahora están pagando $1,300 por ese mismo departamento. Todo es tan caro en este momento y está pagando mucho dinero por su alquiler. Me preocupa que no pueda permitirse ahorrar dinero para comprar su primera casa porque todo su dinero se va hacia el alquiler.

Como propietaria y madre, apoyo la campaña de Estabilidad del Vecindario porque es buena para mi comunidad y mi familia. Tengo un hijo que es arrendatario y quiero que pueda tener una vida mejor. Puedo ayudarlo apoyando esta ley. Es por eso que estoy haciendo campaña con la Unión Culinaria para ayudar a educar a los votantes sobre lo que pueden hacer para ayudar a nuestra comunidad.
