SB426 (Neighborhood Stability): Carlos Padilla
My name is Carlos Padilla. I’m a baker and have been a Culinary Union member for 30 years. I remember when my rent was $1,200 a month for a 3-bedroom just a couple years ago. Now I’m paying $1,800. After getting another rent increase recently, I asked the landlord if the increase was a mistake. They responded by telling me that there is no law in this State that says the landlord cannot raise the rent prices more than they have recently.
The high rent has tremendously affected me financially. Now, I’m budgeting between rent, food on the table, and other necessities. I would love to own a home one day, but with the way things are going I won’t be able to save up for one.
I got involved politically with the Culinary Union for the Midterms. We knocked on over 1 million doors with hundreds of other canvassers in 2022 to talk to voters about Neighborhood Stability. We supported political candidates that supported Neighborhood Stability and who believe in fighting for working families to stay in their homes. Affordable housing should be for everyone who wants to own, but rental prices and fees are making it almost impossible these days.
I am proud of the work that I have done with my Union to drive this conversation that something must be done about high rent. Working people cannot be pushed out of Las Vegas and we need to do something now. I urge the Nevada Legislature to support and pass Neighborhood Stability SB426.
